The PGIHS Research Congress 2022 conference presentation "A Bull in a China Shop: 'Cheena Kade Gawaya' A Study of Using Translations of Idioms in ESL Classrooms in a Public University Space" is a crucial record in my career as a teacher. This presentation is the result of a great deal of research, creative teaching methods, and a strong desire to improve language acquisition in ESL classes. Through this academic project, I was able to demonstrate not only my proficiency in the field but also my deep comprehension of the difficulties experienced by ESL students and practical solutions. My goal was to close the gap between different language competency levels and create a more inclusive and stimulating learning environment by looking into the usage of idiom translations.
This artifact represents my ongoing pursuit of professional growth and my dedication to staying up to date with emerging trends and developments in the field of education. It also underscores my commitment to advocating for innovative teaching methodologies that promote student-centered learning and empower ESL learners to achieve their full potential in the classroom and beyond. I was given a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the academic discourse in ESL education by sitting in on the PGIHS Research Congress and sharing my research findings with other educators, researchers, and practitioners.

One of the major turning points in my career as a teacher was the opportunity I had to serve as a Voluntary Student Counselor at the University of Peradeniya, Faculty of Arts during the previous academic year. This position gave me a priceless chance to positively influence students' lives and significantly contribute to the university community. As a counselor, I committed my career to helping students overcome the different personal and intellectual obstacles they faced during their university experience.
I led multiple counseling sessions, workshops, and outreach initiatives while serving as a volunteer student counselor with the goal of resolving a variety of student issues. I talked with students on a range of topics, from time management and academic stress to mental health and interpersonal relationships, providing direction, understanding, and workable answers. Through cultivating an atmosphere of trust, respect, and privacy, I tried to establish a secure setting where students felt at ease asking for help and talking about their challenges. Through my encounters with students, I was able to personally observe the transformational power of offering sympathetic support and giving people the tools they need to overcome challenges and succeed in both their academic and personal lives. My time in this role not only strengthened my commitment to student advocacy and assistance, but it also allowed me to get a deeper comprehension of the wide range of difficulties that today's university students face. I'm determined to use the knowledge and understanding I've received from this experience going forward as I support and encourage students in their academic and extracurricular pursuits.
